Scuba Diving in Colombo is one of Sri Lanka’s best kept secrets. The wrecks littering the coast are gaining much popularity.
Colombo is home to a range of shipwrecks from World War I Merchant Navy ships sunk by a German ship to Age of Steam ships right up to modern cargo and bulk carriers sunk as recently as 2012. The older ships such as the Chief Dragon and the Pecheur Breton are covered in coral and are home to some of the healthiest ‘reef’ systems in Sri Lanka while the other wrecks such as the T.Sierra have prolific fish life. Most of the wrecks have swim throughs and opportunities
Visibility – Visibility ranges from around 05-20 metres between high and low seasons.
Water Temperature – Water temperatures are usually around 27° C/80° F for most of the year.
Weather – Seasonal averages: 22°C/72°F in winter and 33°C/93°F in summer.West coast diving is best from around October to April, and the east coast is best from around May through to October.
Featured Creatures – Blue and sperm whales, whale sharks. Green, loggerhead, hawksbill and leatherback turtles. Parrot fish, Napoleon wrasse and barracuda. Macro invertebrates, including nudibranchs.
Recommended Training – Sri Lanka is a great place to learn to dive with the PADI Open Water Divercourse. The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, PADI Enriched Air Diver, PADI Deep Diver and PADI Wreck Diver courses are popular to dive many of the sites and wrecks off the coastline of Sri Lanka. You can also become a PADI Divemaster or PADI Instructor from this island paradise.
